 Unusually strong trade, transportation, and utilities jobs over the month 
 
July 20, 2012 - Silicon Valley: The unemployment rate in the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara MSA was 8.8 percent in June 
2012, up from a revised 8.4 percent in May 2012, and below the year-ago estimate of 10.2 
percent.  This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 10.7 percent for California 
and 8.4 percent for the nation during the same period.  The unemployment rate was 12.7 
percent in San Benito County, and 8.7 percent in Santa Clara County. 

Between May 2012 and June 2012, combined employment in the South Bay counties of San Benito and Santa Clara rose by 8,100 jobs to reach 922,100.
• Trade, transportation, and utilities far outpaced its average 300-job increase between May and June, adding 2,000 jobs seasonally. Retail trade (up 1,100 jobs) accounted for most of that gain. • Professional and business services also posted a better-than-average seasonal gain of 1,800 jobs, with two-thirds of the increase occurring in computer systems design and related services. • Other major industries showing substantial month-over job gains included: manufacturing and information (up 1,300 jobs each), and leisure and hospitality (up 800 jobs). • Meanwhile, public and private schools registered a combined net seasonal drop of 700 jobs.
Between June 2011 and June 2012, employment in the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara MSA, which also includes San Benito County, grew by 33,900 jobs, or 3.8 percent.
• Professional and business services (up 8,400 jobs) marked its 26 th consecutive monthly increase in jobs on a year-over basis. Professional, scientific, and technical services (up 4,500 jobs) saw notable gains in scientific research and development (up 900 jobs) and architectural, engineering, and related services (up 800 jobs). Employment services, which includes temporary agencies, expanded by 1,500 jobs from last June. • Private educational and health services boosted payrolls by 8,000 jobs. Private health care rose by 3,800 jobs, largely within ambulatory health care services (up 2,900 jobs), followed by private educational services (up 3,700 jobs). Social assistance added 500 jobs over the year. • Other industries with significant year-over job additions included: trade, transportation, and utilities (up 4,800 jobs), construction (up 4,700 jobs), information (up 3,500 jobs), and leisure and hospitality (up 3,400 jobs). • In contrast, government decreased by 600 jobs from last June.
